About UGC NET Exam

The National Eligibility Test is an exam conducted to determine the eligibility for university or college level lectureship and for the award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) for Indian nationals. Till recently The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) conducted the National Eligibility Test (NET) on behalf of University Grants Commission (UGC). National Eligibility Test which is also known as UGC NET exam is conducted twice every year to select eligible candidates for both Assistant Professor and Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) or only Assistant Professor in Indian colleges and universities.

According to the latest reports UGC NET exam will be conducted by the (NTA) or National Testing Agency from December 2018 onwards.

It should be noted that the candidates who will qualify for the post Assistant professor will not be considered for the award of JRF. According to the official website of UGC NET, the candidates who appear for National Eligibility Test (NET) should specify in their application form whether they are only applying for Assistant Professor of both Assistant Professor and Junior Research Fellowship (JRF).

The exam pattern of CBSE UGC NET is such that that the exam is conducted in 2 sessions where that candidate will need to appear for 2 different papers. The post of Assistant Professor or Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) is given to the eligible candidates on the basis of their performance in the three papers. Aspiring candidates should note that only 6% of applicants who clear the UGC NET exam become eligible for the Assistant Professor post. The reservation policy for ST, SC, PwD, and OBC candidates is applied to this 6%.

UGC NET Exam Pattern

There are a total of 2 different papers (Paper I, and II) in UGC NET exam. Candidates have to apply for all the 2 papers to become eligible for being awarded Assistant professor or both JRF & Assistant Professor.

Marking scheme: 2 marks are allotted for each correct answer and there is no negative mark for an incorrect answer.

Eligibility Criteria for National Eligibility Test

Candidates should have at least 55% marks in their Master’s degree (in streams such as Computer Science & Applications, Social Science, Electronic Science, Humanities, etc.). They should have the degree from a university or college recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
