MPSC Eligibility 2020 - Age Limit, Educational Qualification, Physical Fitness

The Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) sets the eligibility criteria for the various exams conducted by it. In this article, we will give the MPSC age limit, educational qualification, physical fitness criteria for the MPSC State Service Exam, and eligibility related information for other exams.

Latest Update about MPSC Eligibility 

On November 10th 2021, it was decided that MPSC candidates would get a one-year extension for appearing in the exam. This decision was taken considering the lockdown situation due to the novel coronavirus.

The commission has uploaded the notice regarding the MPSC number of attempts in the State Service Exam. The number of attempts per category is listed in the table below:

Information related to MPSC Exam 2020-21:

  1. The MPSC conducts several exams such as
    1. Maharashtra Subordinate Services Exam (Prelims and Mains)
    2. Maharashtra Agriculture Services Examination
    3. Maharashtra Group C Services Exam (Prelims and Mains)
  2. For MPSC exams, the candidates have to apply online via their official website – https://mpsc.gov.in/
  3. MPSC State Service Exam (or MPSC Rajyaseva Exam) is held on a yearly basis to recruit for Group A and Group B vacancies in the Maharashtra administration.
  4. The MPSC State Service Exam Pattern is:
    1. Prelims – 2 papers – 400 marks
    2. Mains – 6 papers – 800 marks
    3. Interview – 100 marks

MPSC Eligibility

The common eligibility criteria/reservation details for MPSC recruitment exams can be found on the commission’s official website – https://mpsc.gov.in/. To be eligible for the MPSC exams, the candidates have to be Indian Nationals. The nuances of the nationality eligibility criteria are given below.

  • For claiming age relaxation, reservation etc., candidates need to have domicile of Maharashtra as per the MPSC eligibility criteria.
  • Also, candidates need to be fluent in Marathi (spoken, written) and pass the requisite competency exam.

MPSC Exam Age Limit

The MPSC age limit for the State Service Exam 2020 is:

  • Minimum Age (as on April 1, 2020): 19 years
  • Maximum Age (as on April 1, 2020): 38 years (General Category)

As per the rules governing the conduct of the examination, there are different relaxations in age criteria as per the category.

MPSC age limits for backward classes, ex-servicemen, qualified players and persons with disabilities are mentioned below:

  1. Backward Classes Minimum Age Limit for MPSC – 19; Maximum – 43
  2. Ex-Servicemen Minimum Age Limit for MPSC – 19; Maximum Age Limit for Ex-Servicemen (General Category) – 43; Maximum Age Limit for Ex-Servicemen (Backward Classes) – 48
  3. Qualified players Minimum Age Limit for MPSC is 19; Maximum Age Limit for them as General Category candidates and as Backward Class candidates is 43
  4. Persons with disability Minimum Age Limit for MPSC – 19; Maximum Age Limit – 45

MPSC Educational Qualification

The educational criteria for MPSC exams are:

  1. Competency in Marathi
  2. Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized university or an equivalent qualification.

As the MPSC exams cover a broad range of posts and services, there are post specific eligibility criteria (educational qualification and/or physical fitness).

The MPSC eligibility given in the official notification for the State Service Exam 2020 (Prelims) provides some post-specific criteria.

MPSC Physical Measurements

A few of the MPSC posts list out physical fitness/measurements in their eligibility requirements. Posts such as Dy Superintendent of Police or related to the Transport department have specific physical eligibility criteria.

The minimum height for the post of DySP is 165 cm for male candidates and 157 cm for female candidates.

      As per the MPSC Exam notification, the maximum age limit (including age relaxation provided to different categories) is 45 years. If you are below that age and comply with other eligibility conditions mentioned in this page above, you can sit for the exam.

    I am 35 years old and belong to the open category and ever since I have read that the age limit has moved upto 38 years old, I am planning to sit for MPSC 2021. (next year)

    I am concerned as there conflicting mentions of age limits on some websites. (some sites mention it as 33 and the others as 38)

    I guess what I am trying to ask is, will I be eligible as a 36 year old from the open category when I sit for MPSC 2021 ?
    Any clarifications will help me with planning my next steps.

  10. Hi, I am from karnataka. I don’t have Maharashtra domicile. Is it compulsory to have Maharashtra domicile or I can write the exam?

    • Candidate from any state can write MPSC Exam provided he is fluent with the Marathi language. In Mains, Paper 1 and 2 have Marathi Essay, Grammar and Comprehension along with other topics. Hence, a candidate must know how to read, write and speak Marathi.

    I have completed my schooling in English Medium (CBSE), but without Marathi as a subject . I am from maharashtra and having the domicile also.
    So my doubt is only that having MARATHI as a subject during schooling is necessary for appearing in MPSC or not.

Hello sir Iam surabhi K, actually my education from 1 to 10 was in CBSE school that is Kendriya vidhyala so we were not having Marathi as a language but I can write, speak and understand marathi very well, as its my mother tounge. I just want a confirmation that i can apply for the exam right??
    Or is it compulsury to have marathi as a language in school??

    • The maximum age is 38 and 32 for MPSC and UPSC respectively (General Category.) This should not have been attained on or before 1st April and 1st August (of the exam year) for MPSC and UPSC respectively.

      The minimum age limit is 19 and maximum is 38. If you fall within these age brackets as of April 1, 2021, you are eligible, otherwise not.

    • You can sit for MPSC Exam. The maximum age for candidates belonging to backward classes is 43. Please note that only Maharashtra residents can get age relaxation.

    what is the role of domicile certificate while submitting documents after we have got the post. Does domicile date should be before mpsc notification date or any date on domicile is valid?

    • As per the definition, “A domicile certificate enables its holder to prove that he/she is a resident of the state either by birth or by having lived in Maharashtra for more than 15 years. The document enables the holder to avail of the domicile/resident quota extended by the state in education and jobs.”

      Currently, no new notification has been released. The ongoing recruitment process is that of MPSC 2020. The maximum age limit is 38.
