AUSINDEX-19 Concludes
Context :
The Australian and Indian Navy have concluded a two-week long bilateral maritime exercise code-named AUSINDEX on 14 Apr 19. Â
The current edition of the exercise had the participation of the highest number of units thus far with four frontline ships with integral helicopters, one submarine and a variety of aircraft including P8I and P8A long-range Maritime Reconnaissance Anti-Submarine Warfare aircraft took part from both navies. For the first time, 55 American and 20 New Zealand military personnel embarked onboard the RAN ships and witnessed the exercises during AUSINDEX-19.
Objective:
The exercise seeks to ‘strengthen and enhance mutual cooperation and interoperability between the Indian Navy and Royal Australian Navy, providing opportunities for interaction and exchange of professional views between the personnel of the two navies’.
Highlights of AUSINDEX-19
The third edition involved exercises in all three dimensions with a focus on Anti-Submarine Warfare Systems (ASW).
This year, the number of participating units of both the navies in the bilateral exercise is the highest till date. Â This increased scale of participation signifies the importance attached to the exercise.
The exercise emphasizes India’s vision of SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) and shared objectives of the two countries towards ensuring good order in the maritime domain.
The third edition of ‘AUSINDEX-19’ (Australia India Exercise), bilateral maritime exercise between Indian Navy and Royal Australian Navy, began on April 2, 2019, with the arrival of Royal Australian Navy’s fleet at Visakhapatnam.
Previous editions
The maiden edition of the AUSINDEX exercise was held in September 2015 at Visakhapatnam, India. The second edition of the exercise was hosted by Australia in Freemantle in June 2017, wherein ships of the Eastern Fleet of the Indian Navy (IN) exercised with Royal Australian Navy (RAN) ships and submarines.
