The first meeting of National Ganga Council
Context
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi chaired the first meeting of the National Ganga Council in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh.
About National Ganga Council
- The Council has been given overall responsibility for the superintendence of pollution prevention and rejuvenation of River Ganga Basin, including Ganga and its tributaries.
- The first meeting of the Council was aimed at reinforcing the importance of a ‘Ganga-centric’ approach in all departments of the concerned states as well as relevant Central Ministries.

29th National Energy Conservation day
Context
Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), under the guidance of Ministry of Power, Government of India, organised the 29th National Energy Conservation Awards.
About the event
- The National Energy Conservation Day is being celebrated every year on December 14 since 1991. The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), under the Ministry of Power, spearheads the celebrations every year.
- The objective of such initiatives is to reduce energy intensity in our country by optimizing energy demand and reduce emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) which are responsible for global warming and climate change.
- BEE recognizes and encourages endeavours of industries in reducing energy consumption by felicitating them with National Energy Conservation Awards. BEE also awards prizes to the national winners of the annual National Painting Competition on Energy Conservation.
About BEE
- It is a statutory body under the Ministry of Power, Government of India.
- It assists in developing policies and strategies with the primary objective of reducing the energy intensity of the Indian economy.
- It coordinates with designated consumers, designated agencies, and other organizations to identify and utilize the existing resources and infrastructure, in performing the functions assigned to it under the Energy Conservation Act.
Australia-India Collaborative Consumer Protection Project
Context
A high-level delegation of the Government of India left to Australia to take part in phase two of the Australia-India Collaborative Consumer Protection Project under Sydney University.
About the project
- Under the funding from the Australia-India Council (AIC) established in 1992 and the support from the Department of Consumer Affairs, Government of India, Sydney University has undertaken the Australia-India collaborative Consumer Protection Project.
- The project will be implemented in four stages viz. workshops and round-table in New Delhi (by Sydney University) followed by a high-level delegation from India to Australia.
- The third stage is the secondment of one person from India to Australia to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission while the fourth stage is specialized workshops in New Delhi (by Sydney University).
- Basic aim through this project is to understand international practices in this field and further strengthen the rules and regulations of the new Consumer Protection Act 2019 which will eventually make the consumers of India more empowered and self-sufficient.
