1. Desert Locust Control

Context:

Agriculture Minister interacts with pesticide industry representatives on the desert locust control.

Details:

• The government has ordered new machines from the UK to tackle the menace of locusts.
• The locust invasion was first noticed last year (2019) and the farmers were taken unawares as it took place after decades.
• The Centre has compensated the farmers who suffered losses from the NDRF Fund (National Disaster Response Force).
• The locust attack, which had started in the Thar desert in May 2019, had extensively damaged crops and vegetation in as many as 12 districts.

2. Jal Jeevan Mission

Context:

Haryana to provide tap connections to all rural households by December 2022; Jammu and Kashmir to provide tap water to every household by December 2022.

Details:

• The Government of India is implementing the ‘Jal Jeevan Mission’ (JJM) in partnership with States to ensure every rural household in the country has FHTC (Functional Household Tap Connection) for drinking water in adequate quantity of prescribed quality on regular and long-term basis at affordable service delivery charges leading to improvement in their living standards.
