The full form of CMO is Chief Medical Officer. CMO is the senior government servant who is the head of a government hospital’s medical department. The post is occupied by a senior doctor who functions as a consultant and who directs and oversees the medical experts, group of doctors & examines into public health issues.

For government hospitals, a CMO ranked top in the system of medical staff. There are many various definitions in various countries for the CMO designation. It is known in the US as Surgeon General and has been called as Chief Public Health Officer in Canada.
